Setting goals is an important part of any planning process and your NDIS plan is no different. Your goals will be unique to you and could relate to anything that will help you achieve the life you want to live. Some people find it helpful to think about their goals in terms of the following categories: daily living; relationships; community participation; and/or employment.

When it comes to thinking about and setting goals, there are no wrong answers. What matters is that the goals you set are important to you and that you are motivated to achieve them. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Talk to your family about what you want to achieve

Your loved ones can be a great sounding board and help you fine-tune your goals; they will be there to support you along the way; and, most importantly, they know you the best. So, speaking with those closest to you is an important first step to planning your NDIS and what you want to achieve from it.

Think about what’s important to you

This is your life and your NDIS plan, so make sure the goals you set reflect what’s important to you. What do you want to achieve? Do you want to be more independent? Would you like to participate more in your community? Are you looking for paid employment? There are no wrong answers here – just make sure the goals are things that are important to YOU.

Think about the future

What do you hope to achieve in the next few years? This could include things like finding employment, moving out of home or going on holidays. You do not have to achieve all of your goals at once – remember, your NDIS plan is reviewed every year, so you can always update it as your needs and goals change.

Think about what NDIS supports you need

Now that you’ve thought about what you want to achieve, think about what kind of support you will need to help you achieve these things. Do you need assistance with transport? Would some therapy sessions help? Would NDIS support coordination make things easier for you? Again, there are no wrong answers here – just be honest about what kind of support you feel you need.
